The Kentucky Board of Education is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of K-12 education in each of the commonwealth's 173 school districts. There are 1,253 public schools in Kentucky as of the 2015-2016 academic year. As of 2011-2012, Kentucky's public schools enrolled 675,530 students. The program consists of a required core of 9 hours in adult education, 3 hours of research foundations, 6 hours of capstone experience, and 12 hours of additional adult and higher education courses. All students are required to take a comprehensive exam. All students are expected to take EDFN 500 within the first twelve hours of their program.
